The Thin Gold Line
Before the officers arrive. Before the trucks roll. Before anyone else knows - there is a voice on the line. There is always a voice on the line.
The thin gold line is the symbol of the public safety dispatcher - the telecommunicator, the call-taker, the voice behind every emergency response.
As the thin blue line honors law enforcement and the thin red line honors firefighters, the gold line honors the men and women who hold the line between all of them - the ones who receive the call, process the chaos, coordinate the response, and do it again before the last call is finished.
They are not on the scene. Their names are not in the report. They work holidays, miss milestones, and carry calls home with them that no one outside the headset will ever fully understand.
This page exists in their honor. The organizations below do the real work of supporting, advocating for, and remembering the people who answer when you call.
For the people doing the work, and the people who support them.
If you work the console - thank you.
If you know someone who does - tell them.
If you've never thought about who answers before anyone else does -
now you have.
